Born Kinjarling Albany, lives Boorloo Perth, Western Australia
Erin Coates is a visual artist working across drawing, sculpture and film. Her practice examines our relationship with the natural world, physical thresholds and the essence of transformed bodies – both human and non-human. She has a background in climbing and freediving and draws on these disciplines to consider interactions with the different spaces we inhabit and the ecosystems within them. Coates’ most recent work has responded to museum animal specimens and looks at how these faunal remnants may act as anchors for her own memories. Her drawings are created in graphite and her sculptural works are made of cast silicone, bronze, shell, antique whale tooth and animal hair. There is an uncanny quality to these works and their relationship to the human body, which is amplified by her use of prosthetic techniques, skills gained from her work in the film sector. Coates’ work is influenced by cult cinema, especially the genre of body horror and often engages a transgressive bodily aesthetic in its combination of elements of human biology with endemic animal species. Referencing anthropogenic impacts on these organisms, the work also proposes possible transhuman futures.
Coates exhibits and screens her work in galleries and film festival nationally and internationally. She has held key solo exhibitions at the Art Gallery of Western Australia in Erin Coates // videos and movies // 2011-2020, and Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts in Kinesphere (2014). She has participated in several major biennales and exhibition projects, including rīvus: 23rd Biennale of Sydney (2022), Adelaide Biennial: Monster Theatres at the Art Gallery of South Australia (2020), Videobrasil - 21st Contemporary Art Biennial | Imagined Communities, São Paulo, Brasil (2019), Driving to the Ends of the Earth, Hiroshima Museum of Contemporary Art in Japan (2018), The National: New Australian Art, at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney (2017). She was the recipient of the John Stringer Prize in 2017 and has recently been commissioned to create public artworks for the new Sydney Children’s Hospital in Westmead. Coates has undertaken a number of artist residencies in Australia as well as in Spain and China. She was the 2023-24 Activating Collections Residency artist for ART ON THE MOVE, in partnership with the Museum of Western Australia. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of British Columbia, Canada, and her work is held in state and private collections across Australia, including the Art Gallery of Western Australia and the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
Erin Coates is represented by Moore Contemporary.
